Malawi joins global campaign promoting medicine safety

The Pharmacy and Medicines Regulatory Authority (PMRA) today joins over 140 national medicine regulatory agencies and organizations from 130 countries across the global in taking part in this year’s #MedSafetyWeek, a global social media campaign aimed at raising awareness about the importance of reporting side effects of medicines.

This year’s campaign is under the theme: “Don’t ignore suspected side effects, report them’ to help protect others from harm.” It runs from 2nd to 8th November 2026.

While medicines save lives and improve health, they can also cause unintended side effects.  Some side effects appear suddenly, while others develop gradually and even after long-term use. Some may be clearly noticeable, while others are ‘silent’ and only detected from tests.

PMRA urges patients and healthcare professionals to remain alert and report any suspected side effects. These reports provide important knowledge on the safety of medicines and help the Authority respond to potential risks.

Side effects are more likely when starting a new medicine, changing a dose, or combining medicines with certain foods or herbal remedies. Always read the information leaflet and discuss known side effects with a healthcare professional. Report any symptoms you suspect to be a side effect, especially if they affect your daily life.

Reports about side effects can be submitted to PMRA through Medsafe-360, by dialling *360# for free on both Airtel and TNM networks.
